The Vision of the NSS is PeopleLiving and Working in Thriving Communities Beyond the Earth and the Use of the Vast Resources of Space for the Dramatic Betterment of Humanity.

What is The National Space Society?
The National Space Society (NSS) is the largest, pro-space, grass roots citizen organization. We are 20,000 individuals committed to bringing about a space faring civilization. We are organized into more than 65 chapters in the United States and around the world.
Founded more than twenty five years ago by a group of visionaries who felt that space policy was too important to be left to politicians and bureaucrats, NSS is widely acknowledged as the preeminent citizen’s voice on space. We advocate an ambitious and inclusive space agenda because we understand that the course of human civilization is advanced by aggressive space exploration and development.
National Space Society Goals
The National Space Society seeks the creation of a space faring civilization, a society in which each individual has the option to live and work in communities beyond the Earth; in the shortest time frame technically, economically and politically feasible.
In pursuit of our vision, NSS focuses its programs and resources on the following fundamental issues confronting our domestic space program:
1. Lower the cost of access to space.
2. Learning how to work in space and use non-terrestrial resources.
3. Ensuring supportive government space policies and practices.
4. Fostering private space initiatives.

Benefits of Membership
Individually, you may feel that your opinion on space issues is lost because you don’t happen to own an aerospace company or serve on the senior staff at NASA or on Capital Hill. When you add your voice to thousands of others who share your visions, you are heard by the decision makers and heard loud and clear. This is democracy at work.
The National Space Society is a membership organization. Membership contributions account for a large percentage of our operating income. Therefore, we answer only to our membership ... not to industry ... not to NASA ... not to the White House.
We make sure that your voice is heard on critical policy issues and investment decisions. Decisions which are being made now. Decisions which will shape this nation’s future in space for decades to come. That is the central benefit of membership in the NSS. In addition, all members are eligible for the following:
Ad Astra
As a member, you’ll automatically receive a year’s subscription to the Society’s award-winning magazine, Ad Astra -- Latin for “to the stars.”
Ad Astra is no ordinary “buff” magazine. Through its handsomely illustrated pages you will receive insider information about future NASA, international and commercial space projects. You’ll learn how space technology in Russia, the European Community, Japan and other nations measures up to ours. You’ll be brought up to date on space-related research in our national laboratories, policy maneuvering here in Washington, and much more.
Society Chapters
As soon as you join the National Space Society you can become a member of the local NSS chapter nearest you. There are more than 75 throughout the world. Chapter activities include lecture series with top scientists and astronauts, workshop, slide shows films and other stimulating events.
Tour Discounts
As a member of NSS, you will be eligible for discount rates on select space-related travel tours. In the past, such opportunities have included a solar eclipse cruise and special launch events, such as the Space Shuttle, commercial ELV and X-rockets, and behind-the-scenes excursions to space-related sites around the country.

Conferences and Seminars
You will receive personal invitations to many timely conferences, seminars, briefings and lectures around the country. You’ll enjoy speaking with top NASA administrators, key Members of Congress, and the world’s leading space scientists and commercial space entrepreneurs.
National Space Society Online
Electronic communications have become a key tool in promoting and educating the public on the benefits of space exploration. NSS has embraced online services, hosting several website s and an area on America Online. On our sites you can interact with other NSS members, astronauts, and other leaders in the space community. To access our sites, point your browser to www.nss.org or on AOL, key word: NSS or SEO.
Special Discounts
When you join the Society you’ll be entitled to exclusive members-only discounts on a wide variety of intriguing books, prints, audiovisual materials, space memorabilia and merchandise. These items are made available through our website and are promoted in Ad Astra.
Annual Space Policy Survey
Each year we survey our members on the most important space policy issues of the day, and we present the results to Congress in testimony on the U.S. space program.

THE NATIONAL SPACE SOCIETY MISSION STATEMENT

IT IS OUR HUMAN DESTINY TO LIVE, WORK AND PLAY AMONG THE STARS IN PERMANENT SPACE COMMUNITIES...

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE NATIONAL SPACE SOCIETY HEART OF AMERICA CHAPTER PLEDGE

In order for Humans to live, work and play among the stars in permanent Space communities we must become beings that strive to do only that which is good and correct. The technology of living in Space is complex, but the most difficult aspect of living in Space is human tendencies. Humans are born with innate intellect but do not have innate wisdom, we must learn this. Without learned wisdom humans tend to put knowledge gained to the most immediate misuse. Training yourself to be a well behaved person is a key factor in learning to live in Space communities and on Earth. One very simple method of conduct that Space interest group chapters can implement is a chapter pledge. You don't have to take the pledge but your chapter membership is free if you do.

The Heart of America chapter pledge is:

On my honor, I will strive to use my innate intellect in coordination with: wisdom, understanding; council, fortitude; knowledge, piety; respect for the creator.

On my honor, I will strive to avoid: pride, covetousness; lust, anger; gluttony, envy; sloth.

If you accept this pledge your chapter membership is free, if you do not then your chapter membership is the standard $20.00 per year.
